Course Description

This 1.5 hour intermediate level webinar will provide the participant with knowledge of interventions specific to inclusive bathroom modifications. The presentation will be filled with visual imagery to give examples of inclusive bathroom design as it conforms to a varied spectrum of users. Multiple case studies will be utilized to demonstrate the application of interventions. This webinar includes a review of critical bathroom measurements as they relate to the determination of client-centered design recommendations and product solutions.

Course Objectives

•Identify various bathroom modification interventions that meet the needs of a varied spectrum of users. 


•Differentiate between accessible versus inclusive bathroom design interventions and product solutions. 


•Through case studies, will formulate and apply a rationale for selecting bathroom modification interventions to ensure that current and future needs of the client, caregivers and other household members needs are met.

About Debra Young

Debra Young —owner of EmpowerAbility® LLC, an occupational therapy consultancy—is an award-winning, certified specialist in environmental modifications, inclusive design and the impact of the environment on health. Debra has 25 years of occupational therapy experience as a clinician, educator and business owner. With unique work experiences in health/healthcare, education, employment and housing, she has been a provider of services across a spectrum of settings and populations for both client-based and systems-level practice. 

 

Debra has earned a Master’s in Education degree with specialization in Assistive Technology (AT) from Bowling Green State University, a graduate certificate in AT from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Elizabethtown College. Debra has been named a Fellow to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and has earned the AOTA Specialty Certification in Environmental Modifications; distinctions accomplished by less than 1% of occupational therapists nationally. She is also the 2014 recipient of the AOTA Recognition of Achievement Award for notable contributions to the profession and its consumers in the environmental modifications specialty area of practice. Debra has recently been selected from a national pool of applicants to participate in Cohort 3 of the Urban Land Institute Health Leaders Network.  

 

Debra has also held external leadership positions as the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) State Associate Director, 55+ Housing and Industries Council Trustee, consultant governor to the Certified Aging in Place Specialist Board of Governors and an NAHB approved instructor for the CAPS and Universal Design/Build courses.  She is the recipient of the NAHB 2013 CAPS of the Year Award. Locally, she is the former Associate Vice President of the Home Builders Association of Delaware (HBADE) Executive Board and former President of the HBADE Associates Council.

 

Debra has published and presented on local, state, national and international levels on the creation of healthy, inclusive homes and communities. She currently holds an adjunct teaching position with the University of South Dakota instructing post- professional doctoral occupational therapy and PhD Health Sciences students on leadership in healthcare and on a course that she developed on environmental modifications occupational therapy practice.
